October of '99, Los Angeles' power-pop trio BUCK released it's sophomore effort BUCK IN BLACK a 7 song E.P for Lancerock Records. Vocalist and bassist LISA MARR and guitarist and vocalist PEPPER BERRY returned to the studio this past June with producer SALLY BROWDER and new drummer CORKY PIGEON in tow.
Corky had just been recruited a week prior to the recording session after his band The Gain disbanded. A week of intense rehearsals for Corky as well as DAVE PHILIPS formerly of Perfect, who had been brought in to double Pepper's guitar, tightened the power trio into a quartet for this particular recording.
Always willing to try something different and, for some reason, always in a panic, Buck decided to take the LO-FI road on their second outing. Where most bands would increase their budgets and time in the studio, Buck worked with an even smaller budget and stripped the production down to its nuts and bolts. Browder recorded the band LIVE, vocals and all, no overdubs, straight to tape, in roughly five and a half-hours. "It was fun, and a nice experiment," says Lisa, " but we'll never do it again!"
The one-off EP due out in mid-October is a mock up of AC/DC's famed Back in Black album including logos, matching photography, and a producer named "Mutt". Songs included on Buck in Black are Get My Goat, Admit It!, All Around the World, Sugar Sandwich (a Leather Uppers cover), Cautious, and Time to Say Goodbye.
"Most of these songs aren't new," says Pepper, "we've been playing them live for awhile. A lot of them are just ones that didn't make our album for one reason or another."
Buck spent this past Fall and Winter touring with The Muffs and playing dates with the Dance Hall Crashers. Keeping to their motto, "No rest for the weary", the trio has already released 3 new songs for their Christmas single - "Christmas in My Heart" on Sympathy for the Record Industry.
