&What a great asset to electronic music, even before the EDM frenzy had been discovered. Dan is a pivotal ingredient to live DJing and production, a real teacher to all.&
-DJ Sneak
For over 2 decades, DJ Dan has been a leader in the Electronic Dance Music scene. An innovator. A tastemaker. A true legend. A record collector at heart, his sound combines the spirit of 70s Disco and Funk with driving House and Techno. With his label, InStereo Recordings, Dan continues to push boundaries and influence the future of dance music as well as to inspire countless DJs and producers.
&The thing I love about Dan is that he's always had a funky spirit and he always pushes the elements of music.&
-Carl Cox
Born and raised on the West Coast, Dan was entrenched in music from an early age. In the late 80s, as the rave scene was blossoming, he began his career playing small clubs in Seattle. By the early 90s, Dan made his way to LA and was the center of an exploding underground revolution. But it was in 1993, in San Francisco, that Dan instigated the formation of the legendary Funky Techno Tribe with partners Kevon Banks and Hector Cardenas. This time period marked the beginning of a burgeoning breakbeat genre that brought together house, dub and techno. Dan's sound became known as 'West Coast House.' With his cutting-edge ideas for promotion, he implemented what is now an electronic music mainstay - the recording and distribution of mix tapes. His ear for new talent also brought a virtually unknown duo to the United States for one of their first shows. Now one of the biggest acts in EDM, Daft Punk tore up the FTT crowd!
It was in 1995 that Dan released his first track under the moniker, Electroliners, with partner Jim Hopkins. 'Loose Caboose' became one of the most definitive and innovative acid breaks tracks of the era, played by Sasha, Digweed, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge, Pete Tong and Justin Martin just to name a few. In 1999, Dan made his first Platinum record, a remix of Orgy's &Blue Monday& cover. In the years since, he has remixed for Depeche Mode, New Order, Lady Gaga, Duck Sauce, Black Eyed Peas, Janet Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, Carl Cox, Trent Cantrelle and Fort Knox Five.
In 2000, Dan traveled the world with long time friend, Carl Cox. And in 2001, Carl released Dan's historic track 'Needle Damage' on Ultimatum Records, voted as one of the best techno records of all time by Urb Magazine.
&Dj Dan is the only DJ that can make me dance every time!&
-Ken Jordan, The Crystal Method
Urb magazine named Dan 'America's Favorite DJ' several times as well as 'America's Hardest Working DJ.' He consistently lands in DJ Mags Top 100 DJs poll and in 2006 he was voted the #5 DJ in the world and the #1 House DJ in the world. By 2010, he released his debut album 'Future Retro,' a name that embodied his 20+ years in the industry. He came back with a vengeance in 2012 with 'Disco Funk Odyssey.& That year, he had over 10 tracks in the Overall House Top 100 on Beatport and has surpassed that in 2013.
Now based out of LA, Dan's 'Funk the House' night at King King has become a huge success, consistently packing the house. His Stereo Damage podcast is a must listen for house music lovers. Mixcloud named it one of the best House Podcasts on their site. His InStereo Recordings label is one of the most successful record labels in America and was named 'Label of the Moment' by the website LessThan3. It has featured artists such as Dj Sneak, Hatiras, TJR, Phunk Investigation, Gary Caos, Dj PP and Wolfgang Gartner on the roster. Dan, himself, has been featured on InStereo, NRK, Toolroom, Pacha, Ultra, Guesthouse, XL Recordings and Nettwerk. He has played at every major club and festival around the world.
&I chose Dan to play my Area 2 Festival because I love his music taste. I love the way he can play techno but still do it with so much emotion.&
-Moby
DJ Dan continues to bring the funk to everything he does from his label to his tracks to his live sets. His extensive musical knowledge creates a soundscape that connects the past, the present and the future unlike any other artist in today's scene.
His most recent releases are 'We Used to Jack' on his InStereo label and 'Mighty Wind' with UMEK, out on Toolroom.
&You are my hero, my icon! You are how and why I love house music!&
