2010 has been a good year forWe Were Pirates. In January, the debut full-length, "Cutting Ties" reached #41 on theCMJtop 200 charts for college music airplay. Then, more recently,MTVfeatured the song, "Settle Down" on episode 11 of "The Real World: DC." And in July,E!played “Long Year” on “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami.”
We Were Pirates is DC-area native and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Boggs. Boggs writes and records his silly pop songs in his home-studio. On "Cutting Ties", as with the debut EP, “The Wolf”, every instrument was performed and recorded entirely by Boggs in his home studio. The new songs are something of a departure from the quieter, more subdued style of the EP. “Cutting Ties” is louder, poppier, and catchier than the catchiest dog-catcher.
“Cutting Ties” features a version of "The Three of Us," a cover song that Boggs recorded which was featured on the Chicago Public Radio show,This American Life.As a result,Chicago Tribunerock critic and co-host ofSound Opinions, Greg Kot, heard We Were Pirates’ version of the song and described it thusly: "Pure pop. This should be the next Fountains of Wayne single...genius."
At the moment, We Were Pirates is playing shows with a band comprised of Gabe Fry (The NRI’s, Lejune, The Alphabetical Order) and Ben Skinner as well as working on demos for a follow-up record in 2011.
