美國(guó)南卡羅來(lái)納州除了鼎鼎大名的Hootie & The Blowfish外，還有一個(gè)走美國(guó)傳統(tǒng)搖滾路線的同鄉(xiāng)Edwin McCain也是不容忽視的狠角色。從接觸鄉(xiāng)村、靈魂樂(lè)開(kāi)始，一直到青少年階段才因?yàn)橄馣iss、The Replacement的搖滾樂(lè)而真正拿起吉它玩音樂(lè)，而這條路對(duì)他來(lái)說(shuō)，充滿著許多意外，臨時(shí)起意組了個(gè)團(tuán)卻因緣際會(huì)的靠著自制的作品《Solitude》而換來(lái)一張合約，自此走上音樂(lè)不歸路。97年的第二張專輯《Misguided Roses》出了一首獲得全美Top 10并駐留成人抒情榜逾15個(gè)月之久的“Ill Be“，也讓他們終嘗成名好滋味。 自99年的平穩(wěn)之作《Messenger》后，2001年Edwin McCain Band推出了嘔心瀝血大作《Far From Over》，整團(tuán)人馬移師德州，在知名老牌鄉(xiāng)村樂(lè)手Willie Nelson的錄音室完成這張作品。也許因?yàn)檫@是他們首次全程參與制作，并請(qǐng)了Neil Young的錄音工程師Greg Archilla來(lái)監(jiān)制，不僅他們自己認(rèn)為這張才是真正做出他們想要的完整成熟的作品，各網(wǎng)站雜志甚或樂(lè)迷的反應(yīng)也是普遍盛贊這張作品比起舊作雖較為樸實(shí)，但音樂(lè)視野卻更廣更有深度。 對(duì)聽(tīng)不慣美國(guó)Trad/Folk Rock的年輕樂(lè)迷來(lái)說(shuō)，剛聽(tīng)這張專輯會(huì)很容易忽視它，可是這是張耐聽(tīng)的東西，歌詞淺顯易懂，每一首歌的故事都讓人感；“Letter To My Mother”是Edwin的真人真事，講的是他愛(ài)養(yǎng)大他的媽媽也愛(ài)他從沒(méi)見(jiàn)過(guò)的生母，親身經(jīng)歷唱出的感覺(jué)真的讓人動(dòng)容；“Kentucky”描述新郎雖不是他但仍給與祝福的婚禮；“Write Me A Song”唱出未婚媽媽、迷途少女眾多女性的寂寞，只愿有一首好歌讓心靈升華；開(kāi)場(chǎng)曲“Far From Over”和“Get Out Of This Town”是Edwin想仿效愛(ài)團(tuán)AC/DC “Back In Black”的重口味搖；“Radio Star”靈感來(lái)自Goo Goo Dolls上電視時(shí)被惡整的過(guò)程，諷刺歌手上電視耍白癡只求唱片可多賣幾張；值得注意的是“Hearts Fall”和“Write Me A Song”的幕后合音是葛萊美獎(jiǎng)得主夏恩柯文(Shawn Colvin)；“Sun Will Rise”是好聽(tīng)的鄉(xiāng)村搖滾；“One Thing Left To Do”加了點(diǎn)Jazz講的是男女想調(diào)情卻產(chǎn)生拉鋸戰(zhàn)，好聽(tīng)也有趣；福音風(fēng)“Jesus Loves Me”做結(jié)尾很恰當(dāng)，整張專輯讓人有倒吃甘蔗之感，Jesus Loves Edwin，讓他可以看盡世事，替很多人也替自己寫出好聽(tīng)動(dòng)人的歌曲.
A rootsy singer/songwriter with ties to jazz and soul as well, Edwin McCain hails from Charleston, SC, and it was with the support of native sons Hootie & the Blowfish that McCain signed with Atlantic Records. Let it not be said that McCain never earned his contract: his touring schedule is among the most rigorous in music — 300-plus nights per year — and his dynamic band (guitarist Larry Chaney, bassist Scott Bannevich, drummer Dave Harrison, and saxophone player Craig Shields) gained respect and support slots for similarly minded artists like Hootie, Jewel, and even the Allman Brothers. Signed to Atlantics Lava subsidiary in 1995, the group debuted with Honor Among Thieves. The single Solitude gained support at VH1, prompting the release of 1997s Misguided Roses, which scored a mainstream hit in the song Ill Be. Messenger followed in 1999 with another love-themed success, I Could Not Ask for More, and Far from Over appeared two years later. McCain was dropped from Atlantic after the release of Far from Over, but he actually quickened his recording pace, releasing The Austin Sessions in 2003 and Scream & Whisper in 2004. Keeping up with his relentless tour schedule through the years, the live DVD Tinsel and Tap Shoes: Live at the House of Blues appeared in late 2004. McCains next studio effort, Lost in America, was issued in April 2006 on Vanguard. Nationwide tour dates continued through spring and summer.
