The grandchild of an arranged marriage between a Sicilian and a Gypsy, Nick Urata is known to the world as the soulful singer and front man for the band DeVotchKa. Based in Denver, Colorado, Urata is also a skilled multi-instrumentalist putting his work on the big screen as original music composer for the 2008 film Fling. Urata and his band DeVotchKa, along with composer Mychael Danna, composed and performed the majority of the music for the Academy Award nominated film Little Miss Sunshine. The film’s soundtrack was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack. Originally a backing band for burlesque shows, in their early years DeVotchKa also toured with fetish model Dita von Teese. Numerous nationwide tours in support of self-released records earned the band an underground following. Their song "How It Ends" was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. DeVotchKa recently finished work on their fourth studio album, A Mad & Faithful Telling, which was released on March 18, 2008. In addition to his current world tour with the band, Urata is actively pursuing a career as a feature film composer. He is represented by Kraft-Engel Management who represents composers Danny Elfman, Jon Brion, Angelo Badalamenti, Marc Shaiman, Graeme Revell and many other composing giants.
