Chicago indie band Hollows began in 2009 when bassist Emma Hospelhorn answered an add on Craigslist posted by area keyboardist/vocalist Maria Jenkins. Jenkins had been playing with area band Parsley Flakes and was writing songs that didn't quite fit with her present band. The two got together and filled out the lineup with the inclusion of area drummer Shane Lobotomy and guitarist Megan Kasten. The group quickly began playing regionally and soon completed their 2009 self-titled album. They earned high praise for their girl group sound with a sinister side and were eventually included in the Chicago Tribune's "Eleven Bands to Watch in 2011" article. The group said goodbye to Lobotomy in 2011, replacing him with Jason Davlantes, and eventually completing their lineup with the addition of percussionist and harmony vocalist Hannah Harris. The band issued a few 7" singles on local labels before arriving with second album Vulture in 2012. With the new album, Hollows had developed their sound dramatically with the inclusion of complex harmonies and subtle chamber pop touches. ~ Fred Thomas
