提起瑞典DRACONIAN樂隊(duì),可追溯到94年5月,那時鼓手兼主唱Johan Ericson,吉他手Andy Hindenas和貝司兼另外一位主唱Jesper Stolpe組建了KERBEROS,一支融入黑金屬元素的旋律重型死亡金屬樂隊(duì)。7個月后,隨領(lǐng)銜主唱兼詩人Anders Jacobsson加入,樂隊(duì)更名至今日。
數(shù)月后,DRACONIAN不斷研究新作品,95年10月27日在Kallgren錄音室制作首張demo,作品的完成恰恰在首場演出后一周。在長笛兼主唱Jessica Eriksson,主唱兼鍵盤Susanne Arvidsson及首曲”My Nemesis”負(fù)責(zé)人Andreas haag的幫助下完成了”Shades of a Lost Moon”,這張作品直到1996年2月才公布于眾,此間,樂隊(duì)的一個老友吉他手Magnus “Bergis” Bergstrom加入了DRACONIAN。
“Shades of a Lost Moon”收到來自各地的好評,并推薦給眾多唱片公司,然而沒有實(shí)質(zhì)性的結(jié)果,到97年1月底,DRACONIAN開始錄制第二張demo”In Glorious Victory”,由于對音色的不滿,這張作品沒有發(fā)行。
之后的幾個月因?yàn)榉娨鄣木壒?,DRACONIAN默默的進(jìn)行排練與編曲準(zhǔn)備,由于Susanne的個人因素被Andreas替代,隨著樂隊(duì)人員的更動,逐漸的DRACONIAN形成了一種自有的氛圍的、旋律的,帶有哥特情感的金屬風(fēng)格。98、99年DRACONIAN全力投身現(xiàn)場表演,積極的反饋奠定了樂隊(duì)再次返回錄音室的信息。99年8月初,DRACONIAN進(jìn)入Kuling錄音室錄制”The Closed Eye of Paradise”,一張圍繞神秘、黑暗的撒旦、墮落天使、上帝的真面及反對戰(zhàn)爭為主題的作品,這張專集Susanne再次以客串主唱出現(xiàn)。不幸的是,錄制非常不理想,無法達(dá)到DRACONIAN的高標(biāo)準(zhǔn),在正式發(fā)行前樂隊(duì)做了些再處理,2000年5月-6月間Andreas,Anders和Johan又試圖提高demo的質(zhì)量,在獲得了一些提高后最終發(fā)行了這張demo。
完成這張作品,DRACONIAN馬不停蹄地開始準(zhǔn)備新的創(chuàng)作,此時,樂隊(duì)的音樂風(fēng)格變得更慢、更黑暗,更加doom,這種元素使DRACONIAN逐漸轉(zhuǎn)向另外一個方向,在promo”Frozen Features”中很明顯的能夠感到。
在錄制了”Frozen Features”沒多久,Johan更換了Andy,由Jerry接任鼓手的位置,樂隊(duì)嘗試著陣容的變換,他們自行錄制的最后一張demo”Dark Oceans We Cry”于2002年夏天完成,這張作品使樂隊(duì)處于聚光燈下,受到了非常高的評價,樂隊(duì)也獲得了與Napalm唱片公司長期的合約。Jerrys的朋友Lisa Johansson作為女主唱也加入樂隊(duì),而jesper不久離開了樂隊(duì)去學(xué)習(xí),一直默默在背后支持樂隊(duì)的Thomas Jager代替了他的位置。
2003年6月DRACONIAN進(jìn)入Mega錄音室錄制他們在Napalm旗下首張作品”Where Lovers Mourn”,專集的封面與內(nèi)頁設(shè)計(jì)由Travis Smith創(chuàng)作,封面非常精美,充滿黑暗與傷痛感,捕捉了樂隊(duì)音樂的精髓,該張作品于10月發(fā)行,收到了輿論與樂迷的贊美,隨之DRACONIAN開始了宣傳與接受各類采訪,擴(kuò)大自己的知名度,同時也沒有放棄新作品的創(chuàng)作,并于2004年7月進(jìn)入Dug-Out錄音室準(zhǔn)備第二張專集”Arcane Rain Fell”,該專集封面依舊由Travis執(zhí)筆,依舊保持了原有的水準(zhǔn),晦澀與哀傷從中飄出。
05年第一個月,DRACONIAN帶來了第二張大碟"Arcane Rain Fell",雖然只是年頭,已經(jīng)會是這年度其中一張最佳厄運(yùn)金屬專輯。這次他們改變了自己,從歌德轉(zhuǎn)移向厄運(yùn),但相同的,是音樂的高質(zhì)素。
一陣?yán)子曷暎瑸檫@張以墮落天使為主題的厄運(yùn)金屬大作揭開序幕。第一個音符響起,已經(jīng)偏離了一些人的期望:結(jié)他破聲搶過了上作中地位超然的鍵琴,這次樂隊(duì)更關(guān)注沉重的riff之進(jìn)行,速度較慢,音樂亦更簡約,鍵琴只作為交響背景和間中出現(xiàn)的鋼琴而且毫不突出,上集誘人的小提琴亦不見了。最大的「問題」,會是上作的焦點(diǎn)女聲這次退為配角,絕大部份時間都是男主音負(fù)責(zé)演唱,他用到死腔、清腔、低吟等唱法,女聲只是間或出現(xiàn)點(diǎn)綴,所以這一作整體上來得比上張重。如果以聽"Where Lovers Mourn"的心態(tài)迎接"Arcane Rain Fell",先入為主的話會很容易導(dǎo)致失望收場,這一次則會更接近厄運(yùn)金屬,不如上作般可當(dāng)作gothic doom一類,美感和音色豐富方面是有所不及,但會是更加重型和低沉。也和上作一樣,起初的歌曲反而是最缺色彩的,越后的歌曲越有味道,這一次最長的作品不是放在最前而是最后,這十五分鐘半長的終曲"Death, Come Near Me",可說是全專輯甚至是樂隊(duì)最光輝的一剎,女主音在這裏有著很多的出場機(jī)會,鍵琴的運(yùn)用亦更加廣泛多變,另外美國厄運(yùn)金屬樂團(tuán)NECARE的主音Ryan Henry亦在這曲客串。這一曲有相當(dāng)潛質(zhì)成為經(jīng)典。
雖然風(fēng)格不同,DRACONIAN仍然能保持水準(zhǔn),這兩張唱片亦適合不同的聽眾群,偏好女聲與華麗編排與歌德美的會喜歡"Where Lovers Mourn",而較接受重型音色和傳統(tǒng)厄運(yùn)金屬,便應(yīng)該嘗試"Arcane Rain Fell"這部佳作。
Originally a three piece formed in Saffle, Sweden in the spring of 1994, Draconian — at that time — went by the name Kerberos, and was a metal band that fused touches of death metal, melodic metal, and a little bit of black metal to round out their sound. At the end of that first year, the band took on vocalist Anders Jacobsson, and with the new set up, changed their name to Draconian. The band's first demo, Shades of a Lost Moon, was released in 1996, and was the result of their initial round of songwriting and arranging. A second demo was scrapped in 1997, a fate which also befell their first attempts at creating a debut album, and the group continued to hash out their sound on a series of demos. Although an EP was available in 2000 (the 2 track Frozen Features), it was the 2002 demo work that went by the name of Dark Oceans We Cry that solidified their sound — adding the vocal work of Lisa Johansson for starters — and snagging the band a deal, with Napalm Records. Finally, after a number of years fine tuning their sound, Draconian recorded and released the 2003 — official — full length debut, Where Lovers Mourn. After fan support was built with the follow up album, Arcane Rain Fell, in 2005, Draconian took a rest from recording new material to rework some old material into an album for long time fans. The collection, entitled The Burning Halo, included work from the Closed Eyes of Paradise demo (dating back to 1999), as well as a handful of new tracks and covers. Finally, in 2007, Draconian got back to the work of crafting album number four (or three, technically speaking.) The resulting work, Turning Season Within, was released in 2008, and was quickly followed by the single, "No Greater Sorrow."
